Hi Linguaponearners!

Today's blog is all about the expansion of the Test Me feature, Linguapon's powerful and personalisable quiz system. I briefly discussed the future of Test Me in the first edition of the Dissecting Linguapon blogs. Over the past couple of weeks, I've been working hard to breathe new life into what was once a fairly one-dimensional quizzing component.

Although I haven't gathered enough comprehensive feedback from users on how Test Me could be improved, I've personally used it religiously every day for the past couple of months. This gave me a clear enough sense of where I could expand it for the better. The new update leans further into the social, fun, and gamified aspects that are key to a social language learning platform.

So, what was added and why?

Greater diversity in question types

There are now nine different question types, each offering a unique way to approach, engage with, and answer.

New:
  • Match a word card in the source language with its translation card. Longer sentences provide an extra cognitive challenge.
  • Assess the correct usage of a word within a sample sentence by answering True or False.
  • Identify the unrelated word from a group of interrelated words.

Tweaked:
  • Listen-to-the-audio questions now accept answers in the source language but penalises your score bonus reward. More on this in a bit. This way, learners can still answer in a familiar way if they don't know how to type the word in a specific script.
  • Choose the correct sentence usage of a word from four options. Sentence complexity adjusts depending on your knowledge of the word.
  • Construct the sentence questions now allow word bars to be reordered by dragging them.

Easy, Medium & Hard difficulty levels

To accommodate learners of all levels, the difficulty settings now change the way you interact with the quiz system.

The most obvious difference: Medium and Hard difficulties include time limits per question, with Hard giving you just 15 seconds to answer!

Certain question types also only appear in specific contexts or at certain difficulty levels. The goal was to give each mode a distinct challenge while keeping the experience balanced.

The main incentive for choosing harder difficulties isn't just the extra mental workout, it's the bigger score bonus for correct answers.

A more thoughtful scoring system

The score system existed before this update, but there wasn't much thought behind how it worked or why points increased. Now, score is calculated based on:

  • Difficulty: Easy = 1× multiplier, Medium = 2×, Hard = 3×.
  • Sentence length: Bonus points for longer sentences.
  • Time pressure: On time-limited questions, answering with less than half the time remaining gives a ½ penalty.
  • Streaks: Bonus for every 5 consecutive correct answers.
  • Audio answers: Penalty for Listen-to-the-audio questions if answered with the source translation.

Leaderboards for the most dedicated learners

Learners now have a reason to rack up points - to climb the ranks on the brand-new Leaderboards page. The leaderboards track top scores across multiple categories:

  • By language
  • By difficulty level
  • By time period: daily, weekly, monthly

You can combine filters to get detailed views. For example, you could see all languages in the past month, or only Thai on Hard mode in the last day.

With these changes, I hope more learners choose to mix up their self-study routines with the Test Me system. Adding leaderboards brings a new, competitive element in Linguapon and is another step toward making it a truly social-centric learning platform!
